After RTF and Art School at the University of Texas, Mark went to Munich to smuggle a film camera back to Austin. A blank stare got him through customs and he began working as a cinematographer shortly after. His early credits include the Indie Features: American Detective and Levelland as well as the festival docs: The Wildest Show in the South, The Angola Prison Rodeo (Oscar Nomination – 00) and The Fearless Freaks (Sundance – 05).
Mark has directed spots for clients including AT&T, BMW, Southwest Airlines, HEB, Suddenlink, U.S. Air Force, Hire.com, GMC, Wal-Mart, Hyundai, Sony and IBM.
In 2010 Terrence Malick asked Mark to shoot science experiments known only as “SkunkWorks”. The SkunkWorks team also included the legendary Douglas Trumbull and together they produced the deep space sequences seen in Malick’s film Tree of Life. Highlights of their collaboration include lighting fireworks indoors, freezing all sorts of things with liquid Nitrogen and fitting the entire Milky Way Galaxy inside a horse trough.
When not directing commercials, ridin’ broncs or blowing stuff up, he can be found on the golf course or at home grooming bonsai.
